EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
