Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
