Each time a major honors show draws close, one notices a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
