This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
